2000 NEW MEXICO CONFERENCE FOR THE ANIMALS AND MILAGRO AWARDS Organizing the Grassroots to Affect Public Policy SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, HOTEL SANTA FE Visit www.apnm.org or e-mail info@apnm.org.

"Organizing the Grassroots to Affect Public Policy" is the theme for the 2000 New Mexico Conference for the Animals on Saturday, November 18, beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Hotel Santa Fe, 1501 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe. Presented by Animal Protection of New Mexico, Inc. (APNM), the conference is a unique opportunity to learn from national and state-wide animal rights activists and to network with New Mexico organizations.

This year, the conference concludes with the Milagro Awards Dinner and Ceremony, recognizing nine individuals, animals, and businesses for advocacy, courage, community service, and education promoting the compassionate treatment of animals in New Mexico.

Conference activities help people acquire skills to be effective advocates on many levels, from their circle of friends to the halls of Congress. Morning sessions deal with how to stop animal abuse by changing public policy, working effectively with the media, and passing state and federal laws. Afternoon workshops include topics such as homeless animals, anti-vivisection campaigns, evacuation plans for animals in public emergencies, ranching and grazing, animal collectors, and the correlation between violence against women and animal abuse.

Featured speakers from national organizations are Tracy Reiman, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Suzanne Roy, In Defense of Animals; Kenneth Shapiro, Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; and Julie Urbanik, Feminists for Animal Rights. Speakers from New Mexico include many APNM staff experts as well as Renée Blake, Media IQ; Dr. Paul Ettestad, State Public Health Veterinarian; Kate Rindy, Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society; A. J. Salazar, Assistant District Attorney; and Pat Wolff, New West Research.

Keynote speaker for the Milagro Awards ceremony is Kim Stallwood, executive director of Animal Rights Network and editor of Animals¹ Agenda magazine. New Mexico notables will present hand-made medallions to winners in eight categories: Advocacy, Animal Courage, Direct Animal Services, Humane Education, Media, Youth, the APNM Executive Director¹s Award for Distinguished Achievement, and the APNM Board of Director¹s Award for lifelong commitment to animal rights.

Registration received by November 13 is $65 for day conference only (includes breakfast and lunch); $110 for the conference and dinner; and $50 for the Awards Dinner only. After November 13, registration is $75 for the day and $120 for the conference and dinner. All meals are vegan. Early registration is recommended.
