"He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
—- Immanuel Kant

Dear Friend and Animal Lover:

There are only three states in the nation that dedicate a week to animal welfare. Utah led the way, New Mexico the second and Ohio the third state to take on the challenge, to make these states a better place for all animals.

Animal organizations throughout New Mexico are joining together to make this annual event a focal point for bringing animal welfare issues and humane education programs to the public.

Special events will make New Mexico’s Week for the Animals enjoyable and educational for both adults and children. Activities you could be involved in are:

  1. Pet Adoption Fairs in Your Area.
  2. Children’s Art and Literary Contest. Grades K–12 can express their feelings for animals and compete for prizes. Winners will be announced in local newspapers with their work displayed throughout New Mexico. We need a State Coordinator who will work with the schools and volunteers throughout New Mexico.
  3. Discount Spaying and Neutering by your local Vets. Animals can’t count but they sure can multiply. One unspayed cat can generate a family of millions! This leads to euthanization of thousands of healthy companion animals every year. Discounts up to 50% will allow us to reduce the animal over population and unnecessary euthanizations.
  4. Humane Education Classes. Aesop wrote, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." Thousands of children throughout New Mexico will learn about compassion for animals in these special in-school humane education presentations. Teachers & Students please contact us for help in bringing HUMANE EDUCATION to your school or classroom !
  5. Seminars for Teachers and Youth Leaders. These seminars will give educators and young adults who want to develop humane education programs in their communities a strong foundation to build on.
  6. Museum Displays and Lectures.
  7. Library Display and Special Humane Education Reading Racks.
  8. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts participation in activities.
  9. Statewide Publicity Campaign. Publicity will be needed to insure that the news gets to every corner in New Mexico Please add information about the New Mexico Week for the Animals to your groups newsletters and web sites, Please help get the word out and we encourage everyone to do so.
  10. Awards Ceremony for Distinguished Service to Animals in the State of New Mexico.

If you will be coordinating an event large or small for activities #1 – 9, please let us know. We have Promotional Materials Available. Contact us and we will be happy to send them to you and to help you with your event or program in any way!
